Thematic Mapper Continuum E. Atlas--------Thematic Mapper--CAC----------GIS
Today’s “quiz” • Go onto the internet and come-up with a definition of: • Entity • Attribute Lect 2 - Electronic Atlases
Quiz 2 • 1. Note down up to three differences between Electronic Atlas and Thematic Mapper • 2. What is an entity? – Define, explain Lect 2 - Electronic Atlases
Thematic Mapper/CAC • Map Making Software available on a computer or over the web with a “fixed” data set • Semi-Dynamic mapping system within highly structured constraints • Some analytical capabilities can be available • User makes own map • Data Stored in Electronic tables • Contain one or more sets of variables (attributes) • One or more sets of geocoded spatial objects(entities) • i.e. geocoded points, lines, polygons • Some choices available in making maps • High end CAC systems can import and export data tables low end systems can only use data provided with software Lect 2 - Electronic Atlases
Pause for Concepts • Entities • Points • Lines • Polygons • Attributes • Descriptors attached to entities • Geocodes • Locational address attached to entities Lect 2 - Electronic Atlases
Thematic Mapper • Map Making Software available on: • a computer • or over the web • with a “fixed” data set • Most common software from GIS companies like ESRI • Favored databases are public ones • Contain entities and attached attributes plus anchoring geocodes Lect 2 - Electronic Atlases
Thematic Mapper • 2. Display -- semi-dynamic, able to create numerous maps – for example • 50 states as entities anchored by geocodes • census data like income, age, ethnicity as attributes • number of maps limited to number of attributes and their combinations (usually only 2 or 3 at a time) • 4. Choice – you choose display Lect 2 - Electronic Atlases
Thematic Mapper • 3. Storage -- attribute data linked to entities linked to geocodes • given data easily manipulated for display • 5. High end systems (CAC -- Computer Aided Cartography) • Allow importation of additional data • Allow limited logical and mathematical functions Lect 2 - Electronic Atlases
