3. Customary Units of Length • Nonstandard units of measure give approximate dimensions. Everyday objects are used as units of measure. Customary Units of Capacity • Capacity: A measure of a dry or liquid volume of a container. • The container has a capacity of 1 gallon • A coke drink is about 12 fluid ounces. • A regular cup of coffee is about one cup. • A can of oil for the car is about one quart. • A large milk container is about a gallon. Simple conversions with Customary Units • Convert: Change from one unit to another, such as from feet to inches. • Change Larger to Smaller units • To change to a smaller unit, multiply. • Example: How many inches are in 6 feet? • 12 inches = 1 foot • 6 feet = 6 x 12 = 72 inches • Change Smaller to Larger units • To change to a smaller unit, divide. • Example: How many feet is 48 inches? • 1 foot = 12 inches • 48 inches = 48 ÷ 12 = 4 feet CONFIDENTIAL
