Recall • Naming binary ionic compounds • (metal and non-metal) • name the metal first • change the ending of the non-metal to –ide
Transition Metals • Look at your periodic table • What do you notice about the charges?
Multivalent Elements • an element that can form an ion in more than one way. • Many metal elements are multivalent. • We use Roman numerals to show the different charges
Cu+ is named copper(I), which is read as “copper one.” • Cu2+ is named copper(II), which is read “copper two.” • Only multivalent metals have Roman numerals in their names.
Charges Change Names • nickel(II) sulphide indicates that the Ni2+ ion forms the compound • nickel(III) bromide indicates that the Ni3+ ion is present.
Examples • Copper (II) sulfide • Copper (I) sulfide • Tin (II) Chloride • Tin (IV) Chloride
Naming MV Compounds • transition metal + (charge) + anion (ide) • Cu2S • Copper (I) sulfide • CuS • Copper (II) sulfide • SnCl2 • Tin (II) chloride • Sn2O • Tin (IV) chloride
