  2. The following tips and suggestions are outlined to provide you with information and advice based on the University’s requirements and previous experience of the kinds of common mistakes students have made, which have negatively affected their marks.

  3. All work should be typed or word-processed. • We recommend word processing – this not only helps with re-drafting work, but also gives Trainees the opportunity to experiment with structure and make changes to the text easily and quickly.

  4. All work must be double-spaced (except for quotations, which should be single-spaced). • Leave a wide margin on either side of the page. A 3cm margin is ample. This allows the marking tutor to make any appropriate comments.

  5. The minimum font size to use is 12 point. Do not use very large font sizes or font styles that are comic or unusual. • Use one of the usual serif or sans serif styles, such as Times New Roman, Garamond, Arial or Century Gothic.

  6. Number each page and make sure that all pages are presented in the correct order. It sounds obvious, but it has caught some people out. • Please do not use plastic display books or punched pockets to present essay work. These make it very difficult to mark the text without removing pages.

  7. Make sure your paragraphs are not too long. It makes reading the assignment difficult • Keep paragraphs to 5-7 lines. • Check your typing for errors which the checkers will not pick up.

  8. Make sure you reference everything not just quote. • You must reference with the text as well. • Check the Harvard referencing in the hand book.

  9. When quoting from the middle of a quote, remember to start with three dots. • If the quote continues then remember to end with three dots. • E.g. “…way to get started is to quit…” • The original quote is “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” Walt Disney

  10. Always check for spelling, grammar and punctuation. • Do not rely on the word processor spelling and grammar checker.
