  4. Let’s Talk About • How do the musicians in a symphony create a powerful sound? • How do we know this teenager’s melody will reach many others? • In what ways might each band member inspire others? • How do artists inspire people with their music?

  5. Listen: “Bud, not Buddy” is about jazz musicians having a jam session. Listen for the words: • Jam session • Steady • Beat • Fiddle

  6. Amazing Words • Jam session- a gathering at which jazz musicians play music and improvise together • My brother’s band holds a jam session every Sunday in our basement • Steady- regular, even • He played the guitar with a steady beat.

  7. Amazing Words • Beat- a unit of time or accent in music • A waltz has three beats to the measure. The best dance music has a good beat. • fiddle- another word for a violin • He pulled his bow across the strings of his fiddle.

  8. Main Idea • The most important idea that the author wants to get across • Smaller pieces of information that support, explain, or tell more about the main idea are called details • In “Aretha: An American Queen” let’s read the first paragraph. • The second and third sentences seem close to the main idea.

  9. “Aretha: An American Queen” • Finish reading the story. Use the graphic organizer to summarize the main idea and details of the passage • Now that you have finished the story, let’s talk about it’s text structure.

  10. “Aretha: An American Queen” • The second paragraph tells when and where Franklin was born. • The next tells about her early teens. • The fourth paragraph tells what happened after she turned eighteen. • The last paragraph is about 1987. • So, what text structure is this written in? Sequential, cause and effect, or compare and contrast?

  11. Vocabulary • appreciate- value • You don’t appreciate how hard that was to do. • Barber- one who cuts hair • He went to the barber to get his hair cut. • Teach your partner these words

  12. Vocabulary • Choir- group of singers • The choir sang Christmas carols for the school children. • Released-made public • They released the picture of the new baby to the press. • Teach your partner these words

  13. Vocabulary • Religious- having a belief in one or more gods • They are guided by their religious beliefs. • Slavery-the practice of owning another person • The practice of slavery is illegal in the United States. • Teach your partner these words

  14. Vocabulary • Teenager- someone between thirteen and ninteen years old • He loved to ride horses as a teenager. • Teach your partner this word

  15. Spelling -double consonants • Let’s take our pretest now.

  16. Troublesome Verbs • Lie= recline • Lay= to put or place • Sit = to rest • Set= to put in place • Rise= to go up • Raise= to force up

  17. Writing • Description • A vivid account or explanation of something • Uses precise words • Vivid adjectives
