  5. Okay- so what is CSS? • ‘Context Sensitive Design’ • ‘Context Sensitive Solutions’ • ‘Thinking Beyond the Pavement’ • ‘Place Sensitive Design’ • All the above terms mean the same thing: • A Context Sensitive Outcome is desired • A Context Sensitive Process is used

That’s Nice…How do you do CSS? • Maintaining NEPA Intent • CSS asks about the purpose & need of a transportation project, then addresses equally: • Safety • Mobility • Preservation (Aesthetic, historic & cultural, environmental & other community values) • Context Sensitive Solutions involves a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach in which citizens & agencies are part of the team

What's Next in the Process? • We have removed the Engineers bias of always thinking we know the answer by: • Using Stakeholder input to tell us what is important to the project stakeholders • Allows for Identifying the Context of the Project • Visioning creates branches of importance which; • Gives us “Purpose and Need”

  12. Is it time to put Designs on Paper? • No – its time to be creative in ideas to address developments of multimodal alternatives • “Strategies Table”

  13. So now can we put lines to paper? • Yes- its time to be Engineers and Transportation Professionals- who focus on OUTCOMES • Multimodal Alternatives Development • Quantitative Screening Of Alternatives • Compliance with NEPA • Final Design • Construction

  14. Any New Initiatives at the NMDOT? • Development of Architectural and Aesthetic Design Guides in Collaboration with the UNM School of Architecture • NMDOT CSS Website-coming soon-end of January 2005 • Two CSS Classes • First Week of February ( 2 days per class) • Make-up for Class Roster
