  1. E-waste Recycling in Glendale, AZ Kimberly Yantos, MPH Student Walden University PUBH 6165-03 Instructor: Dr. Howard Rubin Spring Quarter, 2011

  2. Introduction • E-waste significance • E-waste in America and abroad • Health and environmental costs • E-waste disposal and recycling • Program suggestion in Glendale, AZ

  3. Significance of E-waste • Environmental and human costs • Reduce e-waste locally

  4. Amount of E-waste in America • There is a lot of e-waste disposed of in America. • Few items are recycled.

  5. Problems Caused by E-waste • Heavy metal contamination • E-waste accounts for 70% of toxic waste in landfills (Maricopa County, no date).

  6. Disposing of E-waste • Landfill disposal • Arizona has local protocols.

  7. The Deportation of E-waste • E-waste is often sent to other countries. • Up to 80% of the U.S. e-waste has seeped into Asia and Africa (Huo, et al, 2007, p. 1113).

  8. E-waste Recycling Practices Overseas • Guiyu, China, is a leading e-waste destination. • Recycling practices have resulted in e-waste material and residue dumping (Huo, et al, 2007, p. 1113).

  9. Consequences of e-waste dumping • Guiyu has increased levels of heavy metals in the environment. • The health of children is being compromised.

  10. California E-waste Study • A group of researchers surveyed California residents to learn about e-waste recycling attitudes. • Mail survey was inefficient.

  11. Glendale E-waste Recycling Suggestion • Start an e-waste recycling program • Use e-mail surveys

  12. Impact • Glendale is home to many people. • There is a large student population in Glendale as well.

  13. Conclusions • Too many unnecessary electronics • Health and environmental problems • New technologies and programs needed
