  6. We are predominantly a Rural StateOf 64 parishes, 57 (89%) have rural classification (40 complete, 17 partial). 54 of the 57 rural parishes are designated as Medically Underserved Areas (MUA).

  9. The U.S., and Louisiana, depend upon Family Physicians, more then any other specialty, to provide care to the elderly, to rural areas, to the Medicaid population

SB484 - 2004 Task Force on Future of Family Medicine POSSIBLE PROGRAMS TO BE EXPLORED • Programs from other states that can be duplicated in Louisiana • Early student interest programs (High school and before) • Med School Admissions Programs • Education or training grants, loans, scholarships, loan forgiveness • Financial support to family medicine residency programs • Maintaining appropriate FM exposure in the medical school curriculum • Urban and rural residency training tracks • Increasing procedural training in FM residencies • Support for student housing during FM rotations in medical school • State tax credit for FM preceptors • Improving Medicaid reimbursement • Funding Recommendations
