Colonies -Direct rule -Practiced by the French -Goal: To impose culture and turn colonies into French providences by sending officials and soldiers to rule

Protectorate -Indirect Rule -Practiced by the English -Allowed local rulers to stay in place, but they had rule in accordance with English desires.
