MAIN FEATURES From the community point of view • participation opens up a range of positive roles for the community rather than confining it to negative responses and reactions • participation can help the community identify and begin putting in place the supports and resources to spur brownfield redevelopment • participation can identify the parameters of redevelopment and help create certainty and reduce risk for potential developers and end users • participation can identify the community benefits expected from redevelopment and begin putting in place the mechanisms (such as effective job training programs) to achieve them adapted from: labarbara and others, 2000

MAIN FEATURES Keypoints • A bottom-up multi stakeholder involvement approach asks for dedicated time to build trust and to accept incremental gains, that are definitely the unique result of city and citizenship building • thanks to participation, (inevitable) negotiations are part ofthe process and deliver a plan/project that can be straightforwardly implemented, as opposed to be postponed to the implementation phase, slowing down or preventing the plan/project from being carried on • invest in (limited) time & resources first, as opposed to waste (a huge amount of) time & resources later

AMBIGUITY • participation is not information • uncertainty on goals, questions, stakeholders, roles ... • great expectations > disillusion MISMANAGED MEETINGS • unclear objectives/roles • perception (reality) that output is not taken into account • meeting scattered across too long periods of time, with nothing in between
