Warm-Up Activity • This entire activity will be without talking….. • You need to stand, organize into birth months…. • And then form a line in birth order for that month. • No talking! • January – June: go to the LEFT side of the room (facing the screen). • July – December – go to the RIGHT side of the room (facing the screen).

  4. Name Game - Debrief • When was the game easier and/or more difficult? • Which “pace” did you prefer? Was one more fun than the other? • Did you find any strategies to help complete the task more easily? What were they? • How can we relate this activity to our work in the schools? • What lessons can we learn from this activity in terms of communication and teamwork?

  9. Seems like a normal school day. But it only amounts to 6.5 hrs/day. And 32.5 hrs/week.

How do we fill hours gap? • Training hours • Summer Institute • Ongoing trainings throughout the year • Additional service hours at your placement site, or another Reading Corps school • Participate in literacy intervention during after school program • Participate in before-school activities with students • Additional service hours in the community

Opportunities to Serve Your School • After School Program or Before School Program • Family Nights • Parent-Teacher Conferences • Staff Professional Development Days • Additional literacy initiatives at your school • And outside your school, service in the community … • The Literacy Lab • DC Public Library - Adult Literacy Classes

Make A Plan! • Start with a blank calendarand your hours management tool. • Look at school calendar, fill in hours for regular school days. • Fill in hours for other opportunities at your school. • Family nights, conferences, staff development days • Fill in hours for opportunities in your community. • Make sure it adds up to 1700! • Submit a copy of your plan to Emma by Friday, September 14.

  17. Completing Timesheets • Record time daily– Use Excel file or print out and fill in by hand • Record to nearest .25 hour • Examples: • 8:00-9:15 = 1.25 • 8:00-9:30 = 1.5 • 8:00-9:45 = 1.75 • 8:00-10:00 = 2 • Submit electronically in OnCorps – Internal Coach to approve
