Maturational Differences The physical, intellectual, emotional and socially difference in maturity: Recommendations for the coach: • Match players based on physical maturity to reduce risk of injury to the less mature • Help the physically immature to understand that their late maturity is not abnormal

The physical, intellectual, emotional and socially difference in maturity: Recommendations for the coach (continues) • Occasionally give them opportunity to learn from the better players • Encourage their progress rather than focus on outcome of winning and losing • Help them find a role on the team that they can fill well

Cultural Differences Cultural Heritage: • Diversity in our society, communities, schools and teams is a strength that may cause problems Stereotypes and Prejudice: • Put aside prejudice and learn more about cultures to overcome stereotypes and better understand others Expectations: • Guard against communicating low expectations based on cultural differences

  7. Cultural Responsive Coaching: • Respect each player’s cultural heritage

Coaching Recommendations: • Be sensitive to cultural heritage of different categories of people • Take time to learn the differences • Show respect for them in your coaching • Teach athletes to respect each other’s cultural heritage • Find opportunities for the athletes to share their cultural heritage to foster appreciation of each other

Coaching Recommendations (continues) • Have a clear sense of your cultural heritage and be mindful of how it may influence your coaching • Be inclusive • Don’t discriminate against players of racial, ethnic and social backgrounds different from your own, through; • Less opportunity to play • Less opportunity to communicate with you

  11. 3. Gender Differences • Definition: Socially determined factors that define masculinity and femininity • Research shows that males and females are more similar than different • Boys and girls should be coached the same

  12. Coaching Recommendations: • Be sensitive to stereotyping base on gender • Get to know your athletes as unique individuals regardless of gender

  13. 4. Sexual Issues Sexual Harassment: • Definition: Is any unwelcome sexual advance, request for sexual favours, and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature

  14. Coaching recommendations to avoid sexual harassment: • Don't let your players or assistants engage in harassment • Ask athletes to notify you if they experience or perceive your actions to be harassment • They should notify you if they also experience it from any other person on the team

  15. Sexual Relations: • It is illegal for a coach and a player in an educational institution to have a sexual relationship • A sexual relationship between a coach and a player is an abuse of power, unethical and irresponsible Coaching Recommendations: • You must resist any such temptation • If the player is a consenting adult, either you or the player should resign from the team

Homosexuality and Sexual Orientation: • Homosexuals may be represented in sport at 5 to 10%, the same as they are in society Recommendations: • Provide a safe and fair environment for players of all sexual orientations • Come to term with your own prejudices by learning more about homosexuality • Have policies against antigay and homophobic behaviour

  17. 5. Physical and Mental Differences Athletes with Disabilities: • Athletes who are unable to participate in most sports without some accommodation in the form of special equipment or training or rule modifications

  18. Examples of Physical and Mental Differences: • Sensory impairments • Deafness • Blindness • Physical Disabilities • Amputation • Cerebral palsy • Spinal cord injuries • Mental Disabilities • Mental retardation • Learning disabilities • Attention disorders
