  2. September 2016 August 2016 RSS Feed National Youth Day is on 12th January. Let us come togather and celebrate the importance of the youth in the country and encourage people around us to support their development. Unfortunately, several children work during their early years to earn daily wages. This is the stark reality of a street child’s life in India. Even though adult supervision is a requirement for all children, the young ones who live on the streets are forced to fend for themselves. They look for odd jobs at vegetable markets, railways stations, bus stands, random alleys, factories, and even residential areas etc. Children work long and tedious hours to earn less than the basic wage. Their mental, physical, and even psychological well-being gets severely affected.   One may find street children engaging in child labour all around. Unfortunately, many people have become indifferent to this practice and choose to ignore it. Sadly, children are also hired as domestic help or nannies by well-educated and well-earning families without any hesitation or a second thought. This must stop and drastic changes in this context need to be brought in – an evolved thought, approach and action must go hand-in-hand.    Turning a blind eye towards child labour makes the situation worse. Many children can even be seen begging at traffic signals or the main markets across India. The reason is that children in need have no other way to access any basic resources. And even while working as a child, street children mostly live in abject poverty, deprived of proper food or shelter.

  3.   Children during these impressionable years must go to school. They need to interact with other children of their age and also have some quality playtime. Children must also receive regular healthcare facilities so that they do not face any unseen or undetected health scares. Vaccinations and other immunizations are also integral for wholesome development. All children must feel safe and protected, irrespective of their socio- economic background. The healthy psychological development of a child includes a safe and stable environment, far from the surroundings that a street child experiences daily.    Salaam Baalak Trust is one such organisation that has been working for the welfare of street children for over 30 years. SBT also runs a couple of boys and girls residential homes in Gurgaon as well as other areas in Delhi/NCR.
