Since the late 1500s British adventurers had fought against the native American Indians to make new countries (called colonies) on the east coast. Britain soon owned 13 colonies in this New World. These are now states in the United States of America.
(1) No representation • Americans were ruled by the British parliament in London • There were no American MPs in parliament speaking on their behalf
(2) Taxes • The British raised the price of things in America and took the profits back to England! • SUGAR TAX 1764 = raised the price of sugar • STAMP DUTY 1765 = raised the price of books and newspapers • TOWNSHEND ACTS 1767 = raised the price of glass, paint and tea
