NWF Mission To educate, inspire and assist individuals and organizations of diverse cultures to conserve wildlife and other natural resources and to protect the earth’s environment in order to achieve a peaceful, equitable and sustainable future.
NWF’s Endangered Species Series Funded by a grant from the Surdna Foundation • Educate diverse constituencies about issues that impact endangered species in order to move them to action • Build communities of people organized to protect endangered species and biological diversity • Collaborate with other organizations on projects that work towards these goals
Three Levels of Involvement National activists Trained regional participants People educated about issues and willing to take action National Conference Regional Conferences Online Courses
Online Tools for Education Why did we select courses? • Specific objectives require an educational context • To meet our goals, we must provide the ability for skilled people to work either alone or together, but within a larger community – both online and offline • Our focus is more on learning than content
Focus on Learning Our focus is on the learning experience. Facilitating online learning requires: • Focusing on learners’ expectations, motivations, and engagement preferences • Using technology to support learning styles • Identifying how technology might inhibit learning and re-designing as appropriate
Focus on Learning Our focus is on bringing people together through learning (not solely on bringing content to people) and on increasing the interactive aspects of learning. Tools include: • Courses with evaluations (individual learning) • Discussion boards (peer to peer learning) • Live presentations (current and evolving content) • Workshops (co-constructed learning experiences)
