  3. Agora • Men discussed politics, philosophy, current events. • Buyers/sellers haggled over prices. • Artisans/farmers sold goods. • Wool, pottery, produce, cloth, books etc.

  4. Private Life (Homes) • Homes – mud brick, set around courtyard. • Bedroom, kitchen, dining, storage, bathroom. • Water carried from public fountain.

  5. Women • At home, protected/guided by men, invisible. • No vote, ownership of property or politics. • Ran home. • Spinning/weaving. • Care of children/slaves. • Food, wine, finances. • Poor –worked outside.

  6. Slavery in Greece • 1/3 of Athens. • Allowed men to participate in gov. & arts. • Free people rarely questioned it. • Who? • Captured in war. • Children of slaves. • Foreigners.

  7. The Lives of Slaves • No rights or privileges. • Freedom: buy it or get it from master. • Performed all types of labor. • Necessary for most households.
