Numicon. We use Numicon at Tuke School to teach early maths skills to our students It is a method of teaching basic number ideas in a visual way It focuses very much on shape and pattern to gain an understanding of how numbers work.

  1. Numicon • We use Numicon at Tuke School to teach early maths skills to our students • It is a method of teaching basic number ideas in a visual way • It focuses very much on shape and pattern to gain an understanding of how numbers work.

  2. Handling a numicon shape that represents a number is one of the early stages of understanding number

  3. Students can work independently or with a member of staff

  4. Students can match shapes and order in sequence

  5. Students can arrange pegs in the pattern of the numicon shape

  6. Feeling and finding shapes

  7. Using Numicon shapes at different levels. Here we see matching and using the base board.

  8. Some students can match a numicon shape to a number

  9. Other students will get to know the shapes by printing

  10. Our curriculum • To support the curriculum we have adapted Numicon’sown curriculum to our needs. • We have outline schemes for shape, pattern, counting and addition and these schemes work at 3 different levels • Each class has two numicon packs which staff were trained to use in Sept 2011 and refresh in September 2014 • Numicon provide worksheets that can be adapted and using on our plasma screens
