Activity 1 • Study the following series of pictures developing cities. • Identify what problems people in these cities face. • Create a list in your notebook and add 5 more problems people in these cities face.
Shanty Towns are the illegal squatter settlements that characterise most of the large cities in the developing world. They have occurred because of the huge numbers of people migrating from the rural areas to the cities, which just cannot cope with this massive influx of people.
Activity 2 • Individually, complete the following worksheet on living conditions in favelas using the information from the handout provided.
Plenary • Find a partner. Explain to them what is meant by ‘urbanisation’ and whether or not you would like to live in a favela, giving reasons.
Homework • You are an urban planner in a developing city of your choice. • Invent a solution each, to any of 3 problems in your developing city (see your previous list).Present your ideas in the form of a letter to a friend in living in a developed city.
