  1. Be Kind to Animals Week Be Kind to Animals week is celebrated the first week of May. This event was started by the Humane Society of the United States and has been celebrated every year since 1915. It celebrates kindness and compassion to animals and the human-animal bond.

  2. INTRODUCTION To insult someone we call him "bestial." For deliberate cruelty and nature, "human" might be the greater insult. -Isaac Asimov, Isaac Asimov's Book of Science and Nature Quotations Compassion towards animals is paramount to the development of compassion and kindness towards other human beings. But kindness towards animals is often not addressed in the classroom. In this project we will examine our own feelings about how we view companion animals and how we treat them. Why should man expect his prayer for mercy to be heard by what is above him when he shows no mercy to what is under him? -Pierre Troubetzkoy

  3. TASK As we discussed in the previous slide, compassion towards animals is a precursor to compassion and kindness towards human beings. If humanity is what makes us human and we cannot treat animals with respect, how can we call ourselves such and deem our societies “civilized”? Your task is to research animal kindness, humane treatment of animals via the web,. Then, you will visit a local animal shelter, choose 3 animals and find out how they ended up there and what their history is( ie., did they have a family? How old are they? Why were they taken to the shelter? Etc…). Finally, you will examine your own family history of animal ownership or lack thereof, your relationship with your pet(where applicable) and how, if it did, affect your existing views of animal kindness/human-animal bond. You will write a three page paper describing the above mentioned tasks and give a 1-3 minute presentation telling the class what your found in your research.

  4. PROCESS Below are some websites you can visit to help you research your topic and the sites of some of our local shelters where you can visit. http://www.aspca.org/fight-animal-cruelty/talking-to-kids-about-animal.aspx#humaneeducation http://childrensclasses.blogspot.com/2006/11/kindness-to-animals.html http://www.vet.purdue.edu/chab/ http://network.bestfriends.org/17063/news.aspx http://humaneeducation.org/sections/view/what_is_humane_education

Presentation 20-25pts Presentation is thoughtful and insightful, meets all requirements and is pertinent to written paper. 10-19pts Presentation is cursory, not well thought out. 0-9pts Presentation is poorly thought out or not done.

  7. CONCLUSION Congratulations on all your hard work!! I hope that you have learned something about kindness, humanity and have, perhaps, something about yourself…everyone and everything deserves to be treated with respect and compassion and I hope that this project has helped you along that journey! Remember… To insult someone we call him "bestial." For deliberate cruelty and nature, "human" might be the greater insult. -Isaac Asimov, Isaac Asimov's Book of Science and Nature Quotations "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be measured by the way its animals are treated."
