  2. carbohydrates • The function of carbohydrates is to give energy to all the cells in our body and they fuel the basal metabolic rate • complex simple • Carbohydrates contain carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. • The bonds between the monomers in disaccharides and polysaccharides can be broken by hydrolysis. • Carbohydrate monomers are called monosaccharides e.g. glucose and fructose.

  3. fats • Fats provide energy, keep the body warm, and protect the vital organs from impacts. • Monounsaturated FatPolyunsaturated Fat • Saturated fat Trans fat • Fat is needed for absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. • Fat also provides essential fatty acids that the body needs for heart health, to make hormones and to build healthy cells and skin. • The fat layer under the skin also helps to insulate the body against extreme temperatures.

  4. protein • Protein is necessary for the building and repair of body tissues.  • Structural categories cellular component • Protein is an essential component of the diet and helps your body repair muscle, grow tissue, regulate hormones, control metabolism, defend against illness, and more. • Protein is what makes up your ligaments, tendons, muscles, hair, nails, skin, teeth, tissue, organs, and bones. About half of the non-water mass of your body is made up of protein.

  5. fiber • it does help you feel fuller, and helps move the food through the body.  It also helps prevent cancer, and reduces excess "storage" of unneccessary waste. • soluble insoluble • Fiber, particularly insoluble fiber, maydecrease the risk of colon cancerbyincreasing the speed of elimination.Thisreduces the amount oftimeharmful carcinogens (cancercausingsubstances) are in contactwiththe intestinal cells. Also, stoolcontents, including carc i n o g e n s ,become diluted and less harmful. • Bananas, 3 grams - medium 8" long • Beans, 6-10 grams - baked beans, black beans, great northern beans, kidney beans, garbanzos, pinto beans, white beans • Berries, 4-5 grams - blackberries, raspberries

  6. vitamins • Vitamins are chemical compounds that the body uses in a variety of ways. We need to get vitamins from our diet because we can't make them in the body. There are 13 different vitamins that have been identified as important nutrients for humans. • Vitamin A Vitamin B Vitamin C VitaminD • All of the B vitamins help us get energy from the foods we eat. • Vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene (a form of vitamin A) act as antioxidants. They prevent cells from being damaged by oxygen. • Vitamin A is important for normal vision.

  7. minerals • Vitamins and minerals are substances that are found in foods we eat. Your body needs them to work properly, so you grow and develop just like you should. When it comes to vitamins, each one has a special role to play. • Helium Sodium Selenium Xenon…….. • inorganic solids that have a characteristic chemical composition and specific crystal structure—have been found on Earth. They are formed of simple molecules or individual elements arranged in repeating chains, sheets, or three-dimensional arrays. • Minerals are substances the body needs to grow and function properly.

  8. water • About 75% of the body is water. Water is the body's solvent; it is the medium of all chemical activities in the body, which are many. • Hard Water Boiled Water Rain Water • About 70% of the earth is covered in water. • In Canada, there is more water underground than on the surface. • 884 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly one in eight of the world's populatione • Once evaporated, a water molecule spends about 10 days in the air.
