  1. Encounters with Jesus John 11:17-44 Two words which we use quite often when we regret something... ‘If only...’ Martha, in verse 21 Mary, in verse 32 The crowds (implied) in verse 37

  2. Dealing with regrets • Disciples – let’s go with him. May as well, even if we die with him! • Jesus really is God • Martha – faith in her head • Jesus is the resurrection and the life • Mary – weeping • Jesus respects feelings and devotion • Onlookers – awe, scepticism • Jesus gave them the ultimate sign of God’s kingdom

  3. Our regrets • Things we can’t now change • Wish I hadn’t done that • Wish I hadn’t said that • Wish I had done or said ... • Especially if the person has died • But would you wish your memory to invoke feelings of guilt or regret after you have died? • Other regrets • Wish I hadn’t wasted that time • Wish I had lived more for the present

  4. Hand them over to God • Sometimes can say things to people now • Sometimes can make recompense • Form a habit of thanksgiving • When a regret (about which you can now do nothing practical) surfaces, consciously thank God for his forgiveness • Thank God for something about the person concerned • Satan wants to get at you through guilt and hates thanksgiving to God

  5. A key verse: ‘Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death’ (2 Cor 7:10) • Making yourself feel bad is self defeating • Tempting to think the worse you make it for yourself the more you are repenting • No amount of feeling bad will justify you before God! • Nor does self-inflicted pain from guilt ‘Such things have the appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, false humility and harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value’ (Col 2:23)

  6. Jesus says: ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Do you believe this?’ ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’ (John 10:10) • Encounter with Christ • Life out of death • Faith out of unbelief • Worship of the true bringer of life now and into eternity • Many will be drawn into faith
