  2. Do Now: In your notebook, write what you think an “Idea Wave” is. What do you think it looks like in a classroom?

  3. Aim: What is Accountable Talk? Learning Objective: IWBAT contribute to the group by sharing my questions and responses.

  4. What is Accountable Talk? Accountable Talk means to respond (talk) in an appropriate (polite) manner. Example “ Good morning Ms. Rodrigue. How are you today?” “ I’m doing quite well today.” “Thank you for asking.”

  5. What are the steps of the Socratic Seminar Routine ? Here are the first four (4) steps of the Socratic Seminar Routine: • Step 1) Question • Step 2) Interact • Step 3) Refer to the Text • Step 4) Support with Evidence *Note, there are a total of seven (7) steps in this routine.

  6. Question When reading in a group, the group leader will ask an open-ended question or present a focused task. The group members will then think, write briefly and rehearse their ideas with a partner before a discussion takes place. Example What makes a team successful? How can people’s different backgrounds and experiences contribute to a team’s success? Let’s brainstorm

  7. INTERACT When working within a group (reading), each member is given an opportunity to contribute. Confident and competent contributions, that model appropriate responses will be accepted. Example If a class is divided into two sections, each time someone from section A contributes, section B must follow.

  8. Refer to the Text When reading, it is important to go back to the text.This will help you as a reader and group participant to better understand the text. Also, you will be able to discuss the ideas and issues raised in the reading. Example A team is more successful when people from different backgrounds and experiences work together. What part of the text made you think about that?

  9. Support With Evidence An engaging text raises questions. The answerto these questions is neither right nor wrong. However, all ideas should be supported with some evidence. This evidence should come from the text or from your own experience. Example Let’s each share a time when we worked on a team.

  10. Hot Question How did the author convince you that Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones’s final action was the right thing to do?

  11. Exit Pass Idea Wave Each person must share their response!
