1. DATES DATES • British English • In British English the day is usually put before the month. If you wish, you can add the ending of the ordinal number. • You write: 1st October, 2006 • You read: The 1st of October two thousand and six • American English • In American English the month is usually put before the day. If you wish, you can put the definite article before the day. It is common to write a comma before the year. • You write: October 1st,2006 • You read: October the first two thousand and six • Years • From 2000 onwards, years are pronounced like ordinary cardinal numbers. • 2000 - two thousand • 2006 - two thousand and six • Earlier years are pronounced differently: the first two figures are a number and the last two figures are a number. • 1972 - Nineteen seventy-two • 1515 – Fifteen fifteen When you give an exact date, use the preposition on. I was born on October 11th 1972 If you want to give the month or the year without an exact date, use the preposition in. I was born in October I got married in 1999

2. ORDINAL NUMBERS ORDINAL NUMBERS Ordinal numbers, are numbers used to denote the position in an ordered sequence : first, second, third, fourth, etc. Ordinal numbers such as 21st, 33rd, etc., are formed by combining a cardinal ten with an ordinal unit.
