  1. Lewisham Plus Credit Union Introduction to Credit Union for SELHAG

  2. What is a Credit Union • A financial co-operative, owned and run by its members • Members must currently have a “common bond” between them, such as living or working in a particular area • Led by a volunteer board, but often professionally managed • Offers basic financial services of savings, (sometimes) current accounts, and affordable loans

  3. Lewisham Plus Credit Union • Formed in 1992 as “ACTS” Credit Union • Founded by Churches in the Sydenham and Forest Hill area • Now covers all of the London Borough of Lewisham • Has over 5,000 members (including Juniors), with over £1m both of savings and loans • Offers a full range of services, including the credit union current account

  4. Advantages of membership • Offers a place to save • Enables people to gain access to a current account in a setting many find more friendly and supportive than a Bank • Can be a source of general help and guidance on money and budgeting matters • Offers affordable loans to members, including those on low incomes, often at much better rates than available elsewhere

  5. How to access services • Come to our offices at 262 Kirkdale, Sydenham (Open Monday to Friday 9.30 – 1PM) • Call us on 0208 778 4738 • By email at Manager@Pluscu.co.uk • Via our website www.pluscu.co.uk

  6. How staff can help • Make residents aware of credit union services • Identify particular residents who can benefit, and refer them to the credit union • Make residents aware of the Credit Union Current Account as an alternative to mainstream Banking • Actively discourage the use of “high cost” credit
