  1. Happy Friday! • Do Now: • Pick up the metric measurements lab on the front table • Follow ALL directions • Leave stations like you found them Quiz Today! ALL 30 prefixes and suffixes!

  2. Today’s Agenda: • Finish Metric Stations • Prefix/Suffix Quiz 3 • Characteristics of Life

  3. Prefixes and Suffixes • Bi • Itis • Hetero • Homo • Micro • Macro • Bio • Hydro • Hypo • Endo • Exo • a/an • Hyper • Ology • phobia

  4. Prefixes and Suffixes • Aero • Anti • Auto • Centi • Chlor • Geo • Iso • Morph • Phag • Photo • Poly • Pro • Scope • Sub • troph

  5. Tuesday, September 4th • Do Now: Which of the following are considered living?

  6. What does it mean to be ALIVE? LIFE! What is Life?

  7. What is Biology? • Biologyis the study of all living things • Bio = Life • -ology = study of • Living things are called organisms • Organisms include bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, & animals • Biotic = living or once living • Abiotic = non-living or never alive

  8. Practice! Example: carpet, home, mother, television, father, dog, lamp                    Ecosystem:  Home                    Biotic Factors:  mother, father, dog                    Abiotic Factors: carpet, lamp and television 1. lake, fish, boat, plants, sunlight                    Ecosystem:                    Biotic Factors:                    Abiotic Factors: Ecosystem = where the items are found!

  9. Practice 2. classroom, students, eraser                    Ecosystem:                    Biotic Factors: Abiotic Factors: 3. Mr. Tabor, Mrs. Spurlock, computer, Mrs. Clark, school, paper                    Ecosystem:                    Biotic Factors: Abiotic Factors:

  10. All Living things share common characteristics… • G: Growth and Development • O: Organization (CELLS!) • S: Response to the Stimulus • H: Homeostasis • A: Adaptation • R: Reproduction • E: Energy Use • DNA!

  11. Growth and Development • Must be able to grow, develop, increase in size, and change in shape or structure • Example: Frogs lay eggs. The eggs hatch and tadpoles emerge. The tadpoles develop into frogs

  12. Organization (CELLS) • Must have organization • Organelles  Cells  Tissues  Organs  Organ Systems • Cell is the smallest unit of life! • Unicellular- made up of one cell • Multicellular- made up of two or more cells

  13. Response to Stimulus • Must be able to respond to the environment to increase likelihood of survival and reproduction • Example: Planarians move from light to dark areas using their eyespots to detect light.

  14. Homeostasis • Must be able to regulate INTERNAL environment to sustain life functions • Example: sweating • Homeostasis Video

  15. Adaptation • Must be able to change and adapt over time to environmental conditions and other biotic factors • Example: Fish have gills that make them suited to life underwater • Adaptation

  16. Reproduction • Must be able to produce other organisms like themselves! • Asexual: reproduce on their own • Sexual: reproduce with a partner • Example: Fish lay eggs that hatch and produce new fish.

  17. Energy Use • Must be able to obtain energy from a source and use that energy to fuel growth, development, and reproduction. • Example: Plants use energy from the sun to perform photosynthesis to create sugars

  18. Universal Genetic Code • Must contain genetic code that directs the transmission of inherited traits from generation to generation • Ex: organisms contain DNA

  19. Wednesday, September 5th • Do Now: Get out your LIFE notes from Tuesday Think about it: A man walks into an art gallery and concentrates on one picture in particular. The museum curator notices this and asks the man why he is so interested in that one painting. The man replies, "Brothers and sisters have I none, but that man's father is my father's son."Who is in the painting?

  20. Levels of Organization • Atom  Molecule  Organelle  Cell  Tissue Organ Organ System Organism

  21. Levels of Organization ALL Ecosystems Living AND Nonliving things ALL Living things Same type of organism

  22. Practice Test • Take your time • Read carefully • Record your answers on your own paper • DO NOT write on the practice test

  23. Characteristics of Life Circle • Divide your circle into 8 sections. • On the outside of each section write one characteristic of life (GO SHARE DNA) • In each section draw an illustration for that characteristic • Example: Grow and develop- draw a small person and then a large person
