Fundamentals • Phd accomplished in 4 years • Starting point = starting point of your appointment as Phd-scholar • All formal decisions taken by board of faculty, DC advises • Important: • Strict timing for Phd-proposals • Strict progress-control (guidance committee)
Doctoral committee (DC) • DC advises faculty board on: • Your PhD proposal • Appointment of supervisor(s) • Composition of your guidance committee • Applications for writing PhD in English or defending in English (you need to apply!) • Changes of the title of the thesis • Composition of examination committee (jury) • DC decides on doctoral training programme -> All applications concerning PhD: DC!
Doctoral committee • For all these applications there are forms on the website: http://www.law.kuleuven.be/home/onderzoek/DOCT E.g. • D001: form to attach with your proposal • D002: form you need to apply for writing in English • D008: form for doctoral training proposal (these are the ones you will need in the very beginning, they go with your proposal) (we are working on the English forms)
Doctoral proposal • Within the 1st year : submit proposal !! • Within the first 20 months : obtain a positive advice of the doctoral committee • Extension of your scholarship • Most scholarships : 1-1-2 (bursalen) • Wetenschappelijk medewerkers : 1-1-1-1 • Extension = decided on by the board of the faculty (bestuur) (advice of DC) • Progress of the Phd is just one of the factors taken into account
Doctoral proposal • Submit proposal with Els Costers at least 14 days before meeting DC • Proposal contains (respect this structure!) • Title of the proposal • Doctoral proposal (max. 6000 words) • Proposed table of contents of thesis • Bibliography • English abstract (max. 150 words) • C.v. and list of publications • Proposed doctoral training programme (discuss this with prof. Stijns) • Promotor’s written statement of acceptance • Proposal for a member of the guidance committee • Contact details: how can you be reached during meeting DC (tel, mobile) • Copy of your diploma’s • Details about financing of your thesis
Meeting of the DC • You will receive a planning in advance • 20 minutes of oral discussion about the proposal: you and your supervisor • DC decides • In the evening, DC’s chair will inform you about DC’s decision + give extra feedback (personal meeting with chair) • 3 possible decisions: yes – no – yes but write a note about the DC’s feedback

Guidance committee • Meet regularly during writing of PhD • People with expertise in your domain • Your supervisor(s) + 1 member of DC + 1 (2, more is not recommended) professors that you propose yourself • Need to attend first doctoral seminar
Progress control • 1st year: progress control = Phd proposal • 2nd year : doctoral seminar attended by your guidance committee !! • From 3th year on : written report to your promotor and the DC • Year in wich you obtain your Phd (usually 4th year) : no report needed
Size of a doctoral thesis • In general 100 000 to 160 000 words (Footnotes inclusive) • Times new roman 12p.; line spacing 1 = 500 to 600 words/page 200 to 320 pages • Times new roman 12p.; line spacing 1,5 = 400 to 500 words/page 250 to 400 pages
