Introduction Now that my questions within my questionnaire have been modified and correctly phrased, the next step involved me handing out my questionnaire to a diverse group of twenty participants. I have chosen this specific number of participants as it produces a round number, a variety of options and generalized thoughts and opinions. The demographics which I intend to target are a mass audience of both, male and female aged sixteen years and above. This specific audience targeted is from middle class, living in England and should have a specific thrill for horror films. From the twenty participants who contributed towards the questionnaire, I had successfully collected generalisable results. These result are shown throughout this presentation, assisted by quantative data presented within graphs and a analysis of the information produced. From the representative results, I will then be able to take into account the favoured features and aspects my target demographics most desire. Through acknowledging this I will be able to incorporate this within my very on production package.
Question one Which type of horror film would you prefer from the following: From the graph presented on the left, we are able to clearly see that the majority of the participants representing my target demographic group mostly prefer all types of horror films. The second most preferred option had been ‘Supernatural Happenings’. Therefore, acknowledging the preferred options I will base the idea of my film around the specific genre of horror about supernatural happenings, with the inclusion of other key factors from the other options presented.
Question two What age group would you prefer the characters to be? The bar chart on the left conveys the preferred choices, from the twenty participants. As we are aware the majority of the participants explained, that they would prefer if the characters consisted within the film would be of ages fourteen and nineteen years old. The second option which received the next highest result, had been characters of age eighteen to twenty two. Therefore, from these two proffered results the characters within my film will be of ages between seventeen and twenty.
Question three What gender would you prefer the main characters to be? The third question which I had questioned participants had been about which gender they preferred the main character to be. As we can clearly establish from the graph show on the left, the majority of the participants expressed that they would prefer if the main characters would be female. The second most preferred option had been if the main characters consisted of a mixture of both male and female gender. Therefore by including the common preferred options from these result in order to produce a satisfactory film by attempting to include what the majority of the participants representing my target demographic group is essential. In this case, I have decided to introduce the majority of my main characters as female, with one male main character.
Question four Which of the following particular locations would you prefer a horror film to take place? From the graph, we can easily establish that the most preferred option of the type of location where the film takes place, is within a abandoned house. The second most preferred option had been Blackthorn Lane. Therefore as an abandoned house and Blackthorn Lane had been the most popular option these two options shall be incorporated within my promotion package.
Question five Which elements would you prefer to be included within the trailer? There are many possible elements which are consisted within a film trailer which creates many types of effects and atmospheres. As we are able to see, the participants specifically prefer film trailers consisted with elements such as text as well as an interesting soundtrack. The second most liked option had been a voice over. However, through textual analysis as previous carried out we established that a voice over is most common in a high budgeted film, most likely by an American institution. Therefore, acknowledging the most preferred option, I will attempt to including this element within my film trailer.
Question six The certificate of a film determines not only how successful a film is, but more importantly the range different range of target demographics. It is evidently clear that the majority of the participants would most prefer if the films certificate is a certificate 15. Therefore, the film I intend to produce will include element and target a demographic group which are relevant to the certificate 15 category. Moreover, from this choice the film not only will appeal to a large group, as previously mentioned it will hopefully be successful as the film target a group with a disposable income. This choice would be the best option, due to the fact that my film has a low budget, advertising through below the line advertising will appeal more to the target group. What certificate would you prefer the film to be?
Question seven At what time of the day would you prefer your film trailer to be set? The seventh question which I had asked participants relevant to my promotion package had been ‘What time of the day would you prefer your film trailer to be set?’ It is evident that the time period within the film is essential, as different times of the day can evidently produce many different effects and atmospheres. As we are able to see from the graph on the left the options most preferred are ‘At Night’ and ‘A Mixture’. Therefore taking into account these preferred options, as well as what time of the day creates the most horrific, suspense and tense atmosphere, to portray the horror genre, I have chosen to film my trailer during the night as well as some shots during the day light.
Question eight What time of the year would you prefer the film to be set in? The setting of a film is extremely important, especially as different settings create different atmospheres and emotions, which is essentially supports the genre of a film. As we are able to see, the most preferred option expressed by the participants who are representing my promotion package target demographics, would like the film to be set within the season of autumn. From these expectations I will film my film during the season of autumn, as not only as this will beneficial and support the films genre of horror, the gloomy effect presented within this season will also create an effective atmosphere.
Question nine What type of colour scheme would you prefer to see on a horror website and the film poster? Within every film poster and website, we have established through textual analysis a colour scheme is evident. The choice of what type of colour scheme is consisted within the an important factor, as it can portray may different meanings. Therefore as I hope to produce a horror film, I asked the participants ‘What type of colour scheme would you prefer to see on a horror website and the film poster?’ From the graph shown on the left it is evident that the most preferred option is ‘Dark sinister colours, such as black and a contrasting colour’. The use of a contrasting colour scheme allows elements within the product to look more effective and striking, and therefore may be an appealing decision.
Question ten As we are aware there are many elements consisted within a film poster and website, which are included to engage the target demographics. However, as we are aware through textual analysis, not all these elements can be included on one product. Therefore the tenth question ask participants which element they would most prefer within the film website and poster. As we can see on the left, the graph establishes the most preferred option is the element of ‘Taglines’. The second most preferred is the use of ‘Important Names (i.e. Actors/Directors/Producers). Therefore, taking into account the most two preferred options, I will attempt to incorporate these elements within my promotion package. What information would you prefer on a film poster and website?
Question eleven Would you prefer the layout of the film poster to be? The layout of a poster is also an important feature to consider, as it determines the layout of other elements presented on a film poster. As we have established through textual analysis, it is a conventional feature for a film poster to be portrait. As we can acknowledge from the results presented on the left, the majority of the participants prefer if the film poster is carried out through a portrait layout. Therefore, taking into account elements which my participants prefer, who are representing my target demographic group the layout of my film poster will be portrait. Moreover, this decision has also been made as this specific layout is known as a conventional feature.
Question twelve Would you prefer the layout of the website to be? The last question I asked my participants had been similar to the previous question. However, this time I ask which layout they would prefer for the film website. As we have established through textual analysis, it is conventional for the layout of a film website to be landscape. From the results shown on the left, it is portrayed that the majority of the participants prefer if the layout of the website is portrait. Due to the fact that it is unconventional for a website to incorporate a layout which is portrait, the layout of my film poster will consist of a layout of which suits the elements, such as the image on the page.
Conclusion The demographics which I intend to target are a mass audience of both, male and female aged sixteen years and above. This specific audience targeted is from middle class, living in England and should have a specific thrill for horror films. Now that I have successfully carried out my questionnaire, the information and analysis points which I have gathered will be taken into account, so that as I produce my production package, the following key points which have been acknowledged through the analysis will be taken into account, from what the majority had expressed through the questionnaire in order to produce a successful product, which satisfies my target demographics.
