Against an annual demand of 12 million units, India is only able to collect around 9 million. Blood makes up to 7% of a person’s body weight and the transferable products that can be derived from blood are red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. A unit of donated whole blood can produce at least 3 products; hence each donation can help save up to three lives.
