Possible Methods of Implementing an HSS Review Session at Your School • Meet as a Department and reach agreements as to how review will be structured. • Identify the group(s) of students that you will target (e.g., Basic, Below Basic and/or Far Below Basic). • Decide when the review sessions will take place (e.g., three weeks prior to CST during Advisory Period). • Conduct content review sessions with students focusing on high emphasis and medium emphasis standards. • Work on test taking skills with students. • HSS Department sets a school wide goal for growth on the CST. Doing More than Review and Test Preparation • HSS Department reviews the Grade 11 PA—break them down question by question for the purposes of identifying key concepts, academic vocabulary, and specific vocabulary with which ELs will struggle. • Review the new “Ready Made” Progress Monitoring Assessments—break them down question by question for the purposes of identifying key concepts, academic vocabulary, and specific vocabulary with which ELs will struggle. • HSS Department uses the “Create an Assessment” feature in CoreK-12 to create and administer common progress monitoring assessments. • Use your findings to inform your instruction throughout the year. The Importance of the Periodic Assessment in History/Social Science • The Periodic Assessment in History/Social Science is predictive of student performance on the CST. • Using this tool allows teachers and departments to identify and target students with whom they will intervene. • This intervention will lead to increased student performance on the CST. 2009 – 2010 and 2010 – 2011 Results • 57 of 59 (97%) participating middle schools saw growth in the percentage of students scoring Proficient and Advanced on the Grade 8 HSS CST. • 45 (76%) of those schools either equaled or outgained the overall District growth in terms of percentage of students scoring Proficient and Advanced. • 25 (42%) of those schools saw one year growth of 9 – 20%. Targeted Intervention to Support High School History Instruction and Assessment • The same targeted intervention concept that has been so successful in Middle School may be used to support World History and United States History for Senior High students. • HSS is 13.9% of Senior High API! • The CST in History/Social Science is not simply a reading comprehension test—students must know specific content. How the Central HSS Team Can Support • Provide material: Curricular Maps, CDE Blueprints for Grades 10 and 11. • Provide CST Released Questions and analysis of those questions. • Provide Model Lesson PowerPoint Presentations that offer additional access strategies to support ELs. • Lead School Site Department Meetings when requested.
