  5. Jim Crow • Name for laws created to segregate • Born out of a minstrel show - used as a character to entertain white audiences • Created an “image” of the stereotypical “black American”

  6. Dawn of Segregation and KKK • KKK (Ku Klux Klan) - hate crimes against southern blacks - lynching • Poll Tax - prevented poor southern blacks from voting - effected poor whites - literacy tests

  8. Grandfather Clause • Allowed poor whites to vote • Relatives of slaves could not vote if their grandfather was a former slave • Eliminated poll tax and literacy tests • Eliminated 15th Amendment

  9. Segregation and Plessy v. Ferguson • South passed segregation laws - passed in opposition of the 14th and 15th amendments • Plessy v Ferguson - challenged segregation laws - court “Separate but Equal” is acceptable - created legal segregation
