  1. The Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka

  2. Background • Written in 1912 • A novella in three chapters • Set in a city (Prague) at the beginning of the 20th century

  3. Metamorphosis • What does it mean? • A profound change in form from one stage to the next in the life history of an organism (biological definition) • Acomplete change of form, structure, or substance, as transformation by magic or witchcraft • Any complete change in appearance, character, circumstances, etc. • Let’s make some predictions.

  4. Statements You should stick by your family, no matter what they do. You can love somebody who hates you. People should be responsible for their own problems, even if the problems aren’t their fault. You choose your own destiny. There is a point where it becomes impossible to love someone.

  5. Let’s Start Okay… what on earth is happening here?

  6. As You Read… • Note where Gregor is presented as thinking/acting like a human (H) or an insect (I). • How does Gregor feel about his job? • What is Gregor’s role in his family? • How does Gregor relate to/get along with the other members of his family? • NB: You must have textual evidence to support your ideas.
