  1. ACTIVE READING reading with a pen in hand...

  2. Why actively read?(it just seems to take longer!) • You become more involved in the novel • chapter summaries help you remember plot • you become more aware of symbols • you may be able to use your book on tests and quizzes • notations will be very helpful in writing papers

  3. Here are some possible notations... (But feel free to create your own hieroglyphics - that’s part of the fun; remember to use a pen, not a pencil or a highlighter. A cool color is fine!)

  4. Underline or Brackets • important scenes • great description • (only underline one or two lines; if the passage is longer, use brackets and write why it is important in the margin)

  5. Circle • Dates, places, ages • important names that come up • words you don’t know

  6. Stars • Important passages • a change • important dialogue

  7. Question marks • In the margin next to any part you don’t understand to remind you to ask about it in class

  8. Write a word or phrase • Margin notes • At the end of each chapter write a brief summary in fragments

  9. Possible abbreviations • Chg - change in a character or the plot • imp - important parts • sym - a possible symbol • m - metaphor • fs - foreshadowing • s - simile • a smiling or frowning face - good or bad stuff!

  10. Remember… • Active reading is a skill; you will improve and get faster with experience • it is vital for you to be a strong contributor in class discussions, write analysis of quality, and perform well of tests • have fun with it - but don’t go crazy with it! Active reading should visually help you see what is important on a page, not hinder that...
