  3. North American Masks • Booger snake mask • Cherokee people, Southeastern US • This mask is a Booger mask with a rattlesnake headdress. • Masks like this one were often used in ritual dance performances to satirize the tensions between tribal members and outsiders. • Booger masks were fashioned to represent the faces of foreigners –Europeans, Africans, or neighboring Indians– and the masks were worn during the dance to designate these clumsy intruders.

  4. Mexican Masks • Tigre (Jaguar) Mask • Sierra de Puebla, State of Puebla, Mexico • The Totonac Indians in Puebla may call this a dog or a Jaguar, depending on the village. These masks take part in the Danza de los Huehues, sometimes in other dances, but in this area there doesn’t seem to be the classic Jaguar hunt dance that is so typical in the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca. • This mask is particularly charming, with marbles inset for the eyes.

  5. South American Masks • Gorilla mask • Latacunga, Ecuador • The gorilla is a character in La Fiesta de la Mama Negro, a popular annual celebration in the Quechua-speaking town close to Mt. Cotopaxi south of Quito in the center of Ecuador. The customs and characters of this event are quite unique, and it attracts tourist every year.

  6. African Masks • Mask with crown • Igala people, Nigeria • A large, well-used mask painted white, black, and all three primary colors. Part of the crown that looks white is actually aluminum paint. • The Igala people are the major ethnic group in present Kogi State but can be found in Delta and Edo States. It could also be from either of two other Nigerian groups-- The Urhobo or the Efe.

  7. Theater Masks • Western theatre was born in Athens, Greece between 600 and 200 BC. • The two masks are the symbols for THEATRE. • They are the comedy and tragedy masks
