What the Orientation Meetings Will Cover • Prepare students to be Student Ambassadors and understand the Mission of People to People. • Ensure travel safety. • Facilitate the pre-travel educational component of the program. • Teambuilding activities so you can get to know your fellow ambassadors and leaders. • Prepare delegation for travel. • Build new friendships with your travel companions • Answer any questions you or your child may have about the journey.

  11. Safety Always First At People to People, the health and safety of our Student Ambassadors have always been our top priority. For over 50 years, we've worked to continually make our health and safety measures as advanced and comprehensive as they can be.We choose our destinations carefully, relying on the advice of the U.S. State Department, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Transportation Safety Board, as well as numerous international safety and security organizations. Our delegation managers, who accompany each delegation and coordinate the daily activities, know the local area, are equipped with cell phones and pagers, and are supported by an international team. In addition, we provide training for our delegation leaders, all of whom are CPR-certified.The leaders teach safety during the pre-travel orientation meetings and apply various methods to ensure that students are safe and accounted for during travel. We also maintain a 24-hour presence in our U.S. headquarters during all travel periods, so that Student Ambassador families can contact their traveling student delegate with regard to any family emergencies back home.

Medical Issues and Health Forms • We cannot give students medications • We cannot remind them • Full disclosure is vital • It can be very dangerous if you do not disclose any health issues • Confidentiality will be maintained • If you need a copy of the Health Form Please get one and fill it out before you leave!

  14. Paperwork • Passport • 2 photo I.D.’s • 2 copies of passport • Health form • Success contract • International Cell ? • Order shirt size • Recommendation letters • Waivers- land or air deviations

Academic Credit • High school students (grades 9-12) who successfully complete all the program coursework are granted high school academic credit through the Washington School of World Studies • College credit from Eastern Washington University is an option for students in grades 7-12 who complete the coursework and pay the fee

  16. Academic Credit Change for 2008! • High school academic credit is awarded only to students in grades 9-12 at the time of the program • Students in 5th through 8th grade will receive a “Certificate of Completion” for successfully completing the coursework

  17. On Board: The Student Websitewww.studentambassadors.org/onboard • As part of certification for elementary students- you are expected to complete 11 chapters and quizzes. If you do not have Internet, you will have to make arrangements. • Students log on to view their delegation’s information- learn about their programs, share info about themselves, get to know others. • We encourage students and parents to become familiar with the site!!! • Facebook will be available in January • To Log in students need: Last name Delegate ID Password This is also on the handout!

Support During Travel What the Program Office can do for us….. • Provide 24-hour support for our delegations and leaders who call the program office • Assistance with medical emergencies and insurance claims • Assistance with disciplinary issues • Assistance communicating with delegates’ families

  21. What if this program is not for us? • Make sure that you let the program office know right away so you will be refunded • You lose the deposit fee • It is your responsibility to do this • Your child will be invited back next year • The travel program varies from year to year

  23. Student Ice Breaker Activity • Look for the person who has the same sticker as you. • Introduce yourself. • Find out as much as you can about the other person. • Be ready to introduce your new friend to us.

Assignments for the Next Meeting • Become familiar with the student ambassador site and build your face book profile. • Presentations- we will have 15 for next meeting.-sign up with Alison • Get student I.D • Camera: help your child with camera use- no extra lithium batteries in checked baggage. Extras in carry one in zip lock baggie • On-line assignments: Chapter 1-5 and quiz • Civics sheet • Read the background of People to People and be ready to discuss this at the next meeting.
