Pivotal Dates • 1896 – Colonial war with Ethiopia • 1911-1912 – Italo Turkish War, seizure of Ottoman provinces of Tripolitania • 1922 - Benito Mussolini seizes power and establishes a Fascist State • April 21, 1924 - Campidoglio Mussolini has himself declared a citizen of Rom • 1932-1942 increase in the use of Roman Imagery • 1934 - the installation of four marble maps on the Basilica of Maxentius on the Via dell'Impero marking Imperial expansion- starts a program of road building1935-36 - New map showing colonization of Ethiopia - justified n the basis of "civilizing" and "liberating" the Ethiopians (the 5th has since been removed)1940 - Italy enters WWII by declaring war in France, as an ally of Germany • July 1943 all of the African colonies were lost and allied invasions were imminent

4. 1943 • - July 10 - Allies land in Sicily- July 25 - Mussolini is deposed by a revolt in the Fascist Grand council - Victor Emanuel III appoints Marshal Badoglio as Prime Minister, Mussolini is arrested but later freed by Germans, he escapes to the North of Italy and sets up a republic- September 8 Italy declares Armistice. The Italian people assume the War is over, many of the Fascist army soldiers desert. Germany will not accept Italy’s neutrality, rejects the armistice declaration, Italy is occupied by German soldiers and fascist loyalists

5. 1944, 1945 June 4 - American troops enter by the Porta Maggiore, march into the Piazza Venezia, Rome April 1945 – Germans surrender northern Italy, Mussolini and his mistress are shot and hung by their heels in the streets of Milan
