Purpose • Purpose of the interview: • Collecting information • By means of asking questions • About a statement/issue
Types • There are two extreme types of interview: • Structured • All questions are formulated and determined beforehand • Unstructured • The opposite • Everything in between: • For example: you prepare opening question and the final questions
Questions • Open question: • What is your view on…. • Yes/no question: • Can you meet me on…. • Alternative: • Would you choose statement A or B?
Cycle • Ask question • Evaluate (keep purpose of interview in mind) • Ask further question • Evaluate • Etc • Take notes • Ask next question
Interviewer • Attitude & behaviour: • Should be neutral, relaxed, confident. • Pay attention to: • Tone of voice • Rate of speech (speak slowly, articulation) • Melody (high/low voice) • Volume
More tools • Pay attention to/watch out for: • Stopgaps • Eye contact • Movement (hands, breathing, shifting positon) • Pauses • Text (looking at notes, taking notes, putting notes away etc)
What you say • Should be clear!!! • Formulated clearly. • No plural subjects in one statement/question. • No vague remarks like: • “This kind of..” or “All sorts of…”
Don’t • Ask leading questions like: • “Wouldn’t agree…?” • “Don’t you think…” • “Haven’t you…” • “…right?”
Do • Include a warming up • Introduce yourself • Introduce the topic and purpose of the interview • Inform about time and follow up • Prepare & check (equipment) • Be friendly & neutral • Repeat agreements and purpose of interview at the end • Say “Thank you & goodbye!”
