  1. THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP Arena University June 3, 2006

  2. Quote “When a person’s development as a leader is finished, that leader is finished.” -F. A. Filene

  3. Quotes • We search for special individuals with leadership potential, rather than developing the leadership potential in everyone.  • Leadership is about creating new realities. • Leadership is about learning how to shape the future. • Nothing will change in the future without fundamentally new ways of thinking. This is the real work of leadership. –Peter Senge

  4. I. Thoughts on Leadership • A leader serves.

  5. A. Luke 22:24-27 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.

  6. A. Luke 22:24-27 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

  7. I. Thoughts on Leadership • A leader serves. • A leader influences.

  8. B. Philemon 8-14 Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, yet I appeal to you on the basis of love. I then, as Paul — an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus — I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.

  9. B. Philemon 8-14 I am sending him — who is my very heart — back to you. I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do will be spontaneous and not forced.

  10. I. Thoughts on Leadership • A leader serves. • A leader influences. • A leader leads others.

  11. C. Matthew 21:45-46 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus' parables, they knew he was talking about them. They looked for a way to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd because the people held that he was a prophet.

  12. I. Thoughts on Leadership • A leader serves. • A leader influences. • A leader leads others. • A leader develops other leaders.

  13. D. Acts 11:25-26 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

  14. D. Acts 16:1-5 He came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was a Jewess and a believer, but whose father was a Greek. The brothers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. Paul wanted to take him along on the journey,

  15. D. Acts 16:1-5 so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

  16. II. Service - David • He learned to serve. • He learned to respect authority. • He learned to wait.

  17. III. New ways to do church • Raise up an army of purpose-driven youth. • Equip youth to do missions and start businesses. • Holy Spirit chaos.

  18. III. New ways to do church • Attitudes of ownership to attitudes of servant-leadership. • Activities that young people want to attend. • Innovative initiatives. • The poor, ethnic minorities and women.

  19. IV. What does this mean for you? • You are both leaders and followers. • You will equip young people by: • Knowing them. • Listening to them. • Serving them
