  1. Molars Maxillary and Mandibular

  2. Maxillary Molars • First • Second • Third

  3. Tooth Numbers - Max. • First Molars: #’s: 3, 14 • Second Molars: #’s: 2, 15 • Third Molars: #’s: 1, 16

  4. Eruption - Max. • First Molars: 6 years • Second Molars: 12 - 13 years • Third Molars: 17 - 2 2 years

  5. Maxillary Molar Roots • Two buccal • One lingual

  6. Roots Completed - Max. • First Molars: 9 - 10 years • Second Molars: 14 - 16 years • Third Molars: 18 - 25 years

  7. Maxillary First Molar • Height of Contour: • Buccal: cervical third • Lingual: middle third buccal height of contour lingual height of contour

  8. Occlusal: Max. 1st Molar • Rhomboid • Rounded distal • Three pits (central, mesial, and distal) • Central groove (central and mesial pits) • Oblique ridge • Cusps (5) • 2 buccal (MB, DB) • Three lingual (ML, DL, and Cusp of Carabelli on ML cusp) D M

  9. Roots (3) - Max. 1st Molar • Lingual longer, larger, single • Mesiobuccal - broad, flat • Distobuccal - Smallest, rounder • Short root trunk • Trifurcation • Widespread at the apices

  10. Contact areas - Max. Molars • Middle third

  11. Maxillary Second Molar -Morphology • Smaller crown • Buccal line angles rounder • Occlusal surface: rounder, yet rhomboidal • Distolingual cusp smaller and groove not as prominent • Mesiolingual cusp takes up more of the lingual surface • Oblique ridge not as prominent; groove will cross

  12. Roots (3) - Max. 2nd Molar Compared to Max. 1st Molar • Longer root trunk • Apices closer together • Shorter roots

  13. Maxillary Third Molar -Morphology • Occlusal outline: Heart shaped • Irregular tooth, many grooves in the occlusal • Distolingual cusp is very small or missing • Root trunk longer, roots often fused

  14. Mandibular Molars • First • Second • Third

  15. Tooth Numbers - Mandibular • First Molars: • #s: 19 and 30 • Second Molars: • #s: 18 and 31 • Third Molars: • #s: 17 and 32

  16. Eruption - Mand. • First Molars: 6 years • Second Molars: 11- 13 years • Third Molars: 17 - 21 years

  17. Root Structure - Mand. • One mesial (2 root canals) • One distal

  18. Mandibular Molars 30 19 31 18

  19. Roots completed - Mand. • First molars: 9 - 10 years • Second molars: 14 - 15 years • Third molars: 18 - 25 years

  20. Mandibular First Molar • Height of contour: Buccal - cervical third • 5 cusps • Buccal - 3 (MB, DB, D) • Lingual - 2 (ML, DL) • Wider in the mesial side than the distal • Pentagonal occlusal shape • Central fossa • Three pits

  21. Mandibular First Molar

  22. Mand. First Molar (cont.) • Smaller buccal cusps than lingual cusps • Triangular ridges • Roots (2) = Bifurcation • Mesial: broad and flat • Distal: rounded • Roots are widespread at the apices • Short root trunk

  23. Mandibular Second Molar • 4 cusps, 4 lobes • “Hot cross buns” • Rectangular occlusal surface • Three pits • Distal surface line angles are rounded • Buccal height of contour - cervical third

  24. Mandibular Second Molar

  25. Mandibular Third Molar • Smallest of the mandibular molars • Many grooves • Roots often fused, and turned toward the distal

  26. Distinguishing Molars:Right From Left • Mesial root broader from a proximal view • Sharper line angles on mesial from an occlusal view Narrower Broader Sharper Rounded
