At the NNMC Library, we use the Library of Congress call number system • Here’s how to read LC Call Numbers: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/ENGI/guides/lc-class.html • Please let us re-shelve books • You may check out up to 5 books per subject at any given time • Books are checked out for 28 days • $50 replacement fee if lost Books
We also have a Special Collection, which is mostly relevant to local topics. If you find something in the catalog that you want to use and it is in Special Collections, please let a staff member know, and remember that: • Special Collection materials cannot be checked out • Please ask a staff member to make copies from them • Always, always use only pencil around these materials Special Collections
At the NNMC Library, we have a growing collection of DVDs, audio CDs, and CD-ROMs (many of which accompany books) To browse our titles, please refer to the binders by the computers in the reference area Present title and call number to the person at the desk, and we will locate the disc(s) for you You may take out up to 2 DVDs/CDs at a time (7 days) Audiobooks are a 2 week check-out Media
We have scaled back on our physical serials to provide more online access, and all of our holdings are in the bibliographic instruction room Serials/Periodicals
Microfilm • We currently have several newspapers on microfilm (although the Rio Grande Sun is not indexed) • We also have many local and historical documents on microfilm • Please see someone at the desk if you want to use the reader • Geneaology • In addition to the resources on microform, we also have many paper resources including: • Indexes to microform • Census data • Baptism and marriage records Microform & Geneaology
The NNMC Library subscribes to an extensive list of online databases and scholarly journals • Student Login: • Username: Banner ID Password: Last name • If you have problems logging in, call or visit us • This login is also good from home! • JSTOR: In liberal arts classes such as Pueblo Indian Studies, this database will be particularly useful Online Resources
Crash course in Boolean searching: • “” • () • AND • OR • * • Be flexible with your terms – if one doesn’t work, a variation might (e.g. “woman” vs “women” – which can also be searched as wom*n) • The best way to get really good at searching is to practice! • Boolean terms will work with most search engines, including Google Search Tips
JSTOR search example Example
If you cannot find what you are looking for at NNMC, then we can request items from other libraries • This requires advanced planning – it can take 2 weeks to get an item in, depending on where the item is located • Ask the person at the desk for a request form • LIBROS reciprocal agreements: • You can borrow from other libraries in the LIBROS consortium, but you will need a “permission slip” from us that indicates you are in good standing with NNMC, and you are subject to the other libraries’ lending rules and fines.
