The story so far… • Existing Authentication and Authorisation Services • Athens (HE/FE/Research) • IP Based Authentication (Schools) • JISC Core Middleware Development Programme selected Shibboleth and started in April 2004 • Established Shiboleth Development and Support Service (SDSS) & early adopters programme November 2004 • Becta piloted Shibboleth technology 2004 - 2005 • Agreement to proceed with a joint approach March 2006

Joint Approach • Provides consistency across the whole of education for federated (distributed) authentication and authorisation • Benefits the user experience • Pooling of experience and expertise • Benefits of economies of scale for both sectors • Facilitates sharing of content and collaboration across sectors

What the Federation provides • The federation acts as an independent body, managing the trust relationships between IdPs and SPs • Members sign up to federation policy forming a ‘fabric of trust’ • The federation service provider also: • Checks new members • Maintains a list of members • Provides a discovery service (WAYF) • Agrees technical standards • Provides policy control • Provides support and advice

  6. Timescales • The UK Access Management Federation will be available during the last quarter of 2006 • The SDSS Development Federation is available now • Members of the existing SDSS Federation will be migrated to the Production Federation as the service becomes available
