History: Upper Columbia River (Lake Roosevelt) Fish Advisory 1994: DOH coordinated with USGS on development of fish tissue study. 1997: DOH issues first mercury advisory based on USGS data: Limit walleye due to mercury. 1998: USGS conducts a follow-up fish tissue study and finds no changes. 2000: DOH reviewed USGS data no changes made to the advisory. 2005:EPA RI/FS studies are initiated with sediment sampling and fish tissue studies. 2006: EPA reached agreement with Teck Cominco (now called Teck). Teck responsible for conducting RI/FS ecological and human health work with oversight by EPA. 2008: DOH updates Fish Advisory based on EPA samples. Advisory: Limit burbot and largescale sucker – 1 meal per week Walleye- Limit 2 meals per month.
History: Upper Columbia River (Lake Roosevelt) Fish Advisory • 2009-2010: Teck collects fish samples with EPA oversight. • Six sample areas between Grand Coulee Dam and the Canadian border • 2300 fish collected: Burbot, kokanee, lake whitefish, largescale sucker, longnose sucker, mountain whitefish, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, and walleye • 2012: DOH Updates Fish Advisory ( Mercury & PCBs Drivers) • Women who are or might become pregnant, nursing mothers, and young children: • Walleye, burbot, mountain whitefish, smallmouth bass – 1 meal per week • Largescale Sucker – 2 meals per month • Kokanee, lake whitefish, and rainbow trout are low in contaminants • Everyone should limit largescale sucker to 4 meals per month (PCBs) • Statewide fish advisories due to mercury apply to UCR: • Largemouth bass- 2 meals per month • Northern pikeminnow- Do not eat
