  3. Birth: July 9, 1894; Howland, Maine • In 1912 he joined the U.S. Navy to learn wireless telegraphy • During the 1920’s he joined Raytheon Company • In 1946 he invented the first microwave oven • Death: September 8, 1970 Dr. Percy Spencer

  5. Invented in 1946 • Dr. Percy was testing a magnetron tube and was amazed at how the candy bar melted in his pocket. It brought him to the conclusion that microwave energy was causing food to cook quickly. • Weighed 750 pounds and 6 feet high • Cost= $5,000 • Patented by Raytheon Company in 1946 The Facts

  6. 1960’s- Litton created a new model that was short and wide in shape with a unique magnetron feed. • 1967- Amana Cooperation developed the first home model, The price was $475. • 1970’s- The sales of microwaves grew at a fast rate. • 1980’s- Development of sample methods based on commercials increased.
