Well over 5000 applicants for the positions held in all 3 divisions, 749 Bed students • I’m going to let your Principals/Associate Teachers tell you that this is the best BEd program in Ontario! • G.A.S. Diploma from Sheridan College (1984) • Graduated from York HBA- Psychology/English • BEd- Lakehead University • MEd-Nipissing University • EdD- University of Toronto

4. Me! Glen Sharpe • Research Interests include: • Bullying By Teachers • Sensitivity Training for Teachers • Democratic/Citizenship Education for Students • 20th year of teaching • I have worked as a F/T teaching assistant before attending Teacher’s College • Summer School Program/Hockey School

Continued • Taught grades 3, 3/4, 4, 4/5, 5/6, 6, 6/7,8,and Special Education classes • I have acted as a Mentor for new teachers in Peel and Simcoe CDSB • I have had several Practicum Students in my classrooms over the years • I have written Curriculum Documents for Peel/Simcoe SCDSB’s respectively

6. G.S. Continued • Worked for the Ontario College of Teachers as a Curriculum Consultant • Worked on Hiring Teams for Simcoe/Peel • I have been laid off/participated in strike actions in the mid-1990’s • Negotiated New Contracts for teaching peers • What Does all this mean?

What is Education and Schooling? • Film Clip- School of Rock (7 minutes) • Essentially, my course deals with all that’s wrong with Jack Black’s character • Legally, Morally, Professionally, Ethically, the idea of teacher Accountability • I will try to steer you clear of the many mistakes I made as a teacher, such as………. • My course will delve into the roles/responsibilities of all teachers in Ontario • Let’s take a closer look at the syllabus!

Chapter #1 Teaching-Your Chosen Profession • The chapter deals with the many reasons why we want to teach • The realities of teaching/positive and negative dimensions of the job • The chapter emphasizes the connections of teachers and teaching to society- to children, to parents, to the nation • Society has high expectations of teachers • Teachers are accountable for student achievement, for helping all learners achieve, and for maintaining high standards of conduct

The Challenges of Teaching • BURNOUT- has a devastating impact on the successful performance of teachers • Research has shown that burnout hits the average teacher in the seventh and tenth year of teaching • Combating BURNOUT- regular physical fitness (3-5 times a week) and sufficient sleep! • Exercise helps one cope with the stress related to the position

12. The Challenges of Teaching • Teacher-Student Ratios (lower in the Primary grades) • Student Mobility Rates- refers to the proportion of students within a school or district who move during an academic year • Classroom Management and Increasing Violence • Social Problems that Impact Students

What Does Society Expect of Teachers? • Teacher Competency- being proficient in the use of instructional strategies, curriculum materials, advanced educational technologies, and effective classroom management techniques • Teacher Accountability- expect teachers to adhere to high professional moral standards and to create effective learning environments for all students
