  1. Using the Course Applicability System for Student Advisement www.public.asu.edu/cas Amy Fountain Arizona CAS Transfer Analyst Presentation for ASU June 14, 2000

  2. Introduction • What is CAS? • Addressing student questions using CAS • The paper course equivalency guide and CAS • Features that are “coming soon” in CAS • Getting CAS to work for you

  3. What Is CAS? A Web-based Tool for Transfer Students and Advisors, Providing: • “Transfer planning guides” • Interactive DARS reports that show how a student’s community college coursework will apply to a university degree • “Cross-reference planning guides” • Which courses at a community college will apply to a university degree • “Course equivalency guide” • Equivalencies and general studies designations for all Arizona public community college courses to all Arizona public universities (1990 through 2000)

  4. Addressing Student Questions Using CAS: “How Will My Community College Courses Transfer to ASU?” (Major Decided) • The student enters her community college coursework into CAS • How? Print the “CAS guide” from the CAS homepage! • The coursework is saved from session to session • She creates a “planning guide” for her selected major • She receives a DARS report that reads her courses through all of the relevant CEGs, and applies the courses to her degree requirements • The planning guides are also saved from session to session

  5. Addressing Student Questions Using CAS: “How Will My Community College Courses Transfer to ASU?” Major Unknown • The student enters his community college coursework into CAS • He creates a “planning guide” called “A look at my CAS courses” • He receives a DARS report that reads his courses through all of the relevant CEGs, and displays a list of the ASU equivalencies • The student may create multiple planning guides, for multiple majors, and ‘comparison shop’

  6. Addressing Student Questions Using CAS: “What Community College Courses Can I Take Toward My ASU Degree?” (Major Known) • The student need not enter any coursework into CAS • He could enter any previous community college coursework he has taken • Do not enter ASU coursework • He creates a “cross-reference planning guide” • He would select his institution and major, and also a community college and year/term • He receives a DARS report showing: • The applicability of his community college coursework, and • Other courses at the community college that would apply toward the degree

  7. Addressing Student Questions Using CAS: “What Community College Courses Can I Take Toward My ASU Degree?” (Major Unknown) • The student need not enter any coursework into CAS • She creates a “cross-reference planning guide” for ASU general studies • She would get a report containing the community college courses that would count towards general studies • She may also create multiple cross-reference planning guides for multiple majors, for ‘comparison shopping’

  8. The Paper Course Equivalency Guide and CAS • The old CEG, published annually, contained both equivalency and applicability information • The “course equivalency guide” in CAS contains ONLY EQUIVLANCY INFORMATION! • If possible, it is always best to create a transfer planning guide for a student • Please note: CAS is the new CEG. The course equivalency guide in CAS is NOT the new CEG

  9. Features That Are “Coming Soon” in CAS • We are currently running CAS version 1.3 • CAS version 2.0 is being tested in a “quality assurance” environment • CAS version 2.0 will be deployed this summer • There are two advantages to CAS 2.0: • Cosmetics and navigation • New features

  10. Advantages to CAS 2.0: Cosmetics and Navigation • Visit http://transfer.org > Ohio CAS project to view CAS 2.0 software • The look and feel is much smoother and cleaner • There is improved navigation • The structure of the site is very similar to CAS 1.3!

  11. Advantages to CAS 2.0: New Features • CAS 2.0 has a special account type for advisors! • Advisors will have access to view planning guides created by their students • Advisors will have access to both the student and the administrative view of the course equivalency guide • There are other new administrative features that will help schools keep their information in CAS up to date

  12. Getting CAS to Work for You • CAS is a continuing “work in progress” • How CAS gets changed: • Contact the ASU CAS team • The CAS team works with the statewide CAS implementation team to deal with the issue • The statewide CAS team works with the software vendors to address the needs you identify • CAS is a national project, and Arizona is a leader in its development and implementation

  13. Summary • What is CAS? • Addressing student questions using CAS • The paper course equivalency guide and CAS • Features that are “coming soon” in CAS • Getting CAS to work for you
