  1. Off-beam Infrastructure for AIDA(A proposal for discussion) kick-off meeting, CERN, Feb 16th 2010 Iván Vila Álvarez

  2. _Outline • What we said more than one year ago: • Goals and groups. • CSIC possible contributions/interests: • Fiber Optic Sensors for environmental and structural monitoring. • Thermal box and CO2 cooling 17th RD50 Workshop, CERN, Geneva Nov 16th 2010

  3. More than one year ago(1) 17th RD50 Workshop, CERN, Geneva Nov 16th 2010

  4. More than one year ago (2) • Need of a dedicated task force. • Determine the “community requirements”. • Establish a baseline design. 17th RD50 Workshop, CERN, Geneva Nov 16th 2010

  5. _ CSIC contribution • In AIDA’s WP9.3 two institutes under the CSIC umbrella: • Instituto de Fisica Corpuscular (IFIC) at Valencia (IFIC) (CSIC-UV) • Joint institute of CSIC & Universitat de Valencia, research areas: particle, astroparticle and nuclear physics. (about 200 people) • Instituto de Fisica de Cantabria at Santander (IFCA) (CSIC-UC) • Joint institute of CSIC & Universidad de Cantabria, research areas: particle physics and astrophysics. (more than 100 people). 17th RD50 Workshop, CERN, Geneva Nov 16th 2010

  6. _OFS & FBG advantages • General attributes of Fiber Optic Sensors: • Immunity against: • High electromagnetic fields, high voltages. • High and low temperatures. • Nuclear radiation environments (not in all the cases) • Light-weight, miniaturized, flexible, low thermal conductivity. • Low-loss, long-range signal transmission(“Remote sensing”) • Specific FBG attributes: • Multiplexing capability (sensor network) • Embedding in composite materials. • Wavelength encoded ( neutral to intensity drifts) • Mass producible at reasonable costs. • Very high and low temperatures (4 K to 1200 K). I. Vila, ILWS ECFA Vertex session, Geneva Oct. 20th 2010

  7. _Introduction to OFS • Well know monitoring technologies in aeronautics and civil works based on optical fiber sensors (OFS) • Distributed strain & temperature sensors are conventionally used for structure health monitoring : SMART structures • Other OFS: dosimetry, humidity, B field, acceleration, etc. • In aeronautics (embedded or bonded) on the of the CFRP composite ( for instance, plane radar radome) I. Vila, ILWS ECFA Vertex session, Geneva Oct. 20th 2010

  8. FBG sensors irradiation Dispersion of 3 pm ( 3 um) about 1.5 mm range I. Vila, ILWS ECFA Vertex session, Geneva Oct. 20th 2010

  9. Open CO2coolingplant in Valencia CO2plant ATLAS EC Petal • First iteration of an open circuit plant (no recirculation) • Further improvements expected • First tests on an ATLAS petal Fully operational! cmarinas@ific.uv.es 27 B2GM7 cmarinas@ific.uv.es

  10. Thermal image Petal size: 70x20 cm Outlet Inlet The CO2 worked well until the desired temperature: ~ -25ºC cmarinas@ific.uv.es 28 B2GM7 cmarinas@ific.uv.es

  11. ThermalMock-up in Valencia 17th RD50 Workshop, CERN, Geneva Nov 16th 2010

  12. ThermalChamber in Valencia 17th RD50 Workshop, CERN, Geneva Nov 16th 2010

  13. THANK YOU! 17th RD50 Workshop, CERN, Geneva Nov 16th 2010
