Laboratory Tests for Petroleum • Pre ME tests: TPH by EPA SW846 8015 • 1980s Gasoline and Fuel Oil: DEP 3.3.1.1 and 3.3.1.2 • 1992 Gasoline and Fuel Oil: DEP 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 • 1995 GRO and DRO: ME 4.1.25 and 4.2.17 • 2009 VPH and EPH
The not so New Petroleum Methods • Taken from Massachusetts • Developed to yield risk based fraction concentrations • Volatile Petroleum Hydrocarbons [VPH] replacing GRO • Air Phase Petroleum Hydrocarbons [APH] • Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons [EPH] replacing DRO • Analytical costs a little higher and reports need a little more explanation for clients
VPH Analysis • Similar to GRO, except specifies two detectors and breaks aliphatic chromatogram into sections [fractions] by elution time • Sample collection similar to GRO [size] • Purge and Trap/ Gas Chromatography with photo-ionization detector for aromatics and flame ionization detector for aliphatics • http://www.mass.gov/dep/cleanup/laws/vph0504.pdf
Feedback Requested: Deborah.Stahler@maine.gov UNDERSTANDING EXTRACTABLE PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS and VOLATILE PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS WATER TEST RESULTS The purpose of this informational handout is to help you understand petroleum test results for your drinking water. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] relies on laboratory tests called EPH [Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons] and VPH [Volatile Petroleum Hydrocarbons] to test for the presence of gasoline or fuel oil in drinking water. These tests provide information needed to determine if drinking water supplies near petroleum spills are contaminated with petroleum above health-based guidelines. http://www.maine.gov/dep/rwm/petroleum/vphephexplanationforhomeowners.doc
APH Analysis • Indoor air or soil gas analysis • Sampling similar to TO-15 analysis • Target compounds and ranges similar to VPH [see sample report] • Analytical method similar to VPH • Fewer labs set up • http://www.mass.gov/dep/cleanup/laws/aphsop08.pdf
EPH Analysis • Sample collection similar to DRO • Extraction similar to DRO • Silica gel column separation into aromatic and aliphatic fractions • Fraction analysis with GC/FID or GC/MS • Fractionation based on elution time • http://www.mass.gov/dep/cleanup/laws/eph0504.pdf
Soil Extraction Sonication for only highly contaminated samples Soxlet Extraction PFE Extraction
Gas Chromatography GC Column inside GC
EPH/ VPH Laboratories • HETL • Katahdin • NEL:not yet, will likely offer in future • AMRO [NH] • Analytics [NH] • Resource [NH] • Acutest [MA] lab also performs APH • Spectrum [MA] Matt Sica will certify for EPH/VPH when adopted
ANALYSIS PRICE VPH:$75 to $125 EPH:$150 to $240 APH:$275 to $300
