  3. MILITARISM • A national policy based on military strength and the glorification of war • Countries began to strengthen their military if they feared another country was strengthening theirs • Some developed the idea of conscription, calling up civilians for duty and military training for all

  4. ALLIANCES • The defense agreements between nations • By 1907 nearly all of the countries of Europe had developed some sort of alliance with other countries. • Alliances grew in numbers because of the strong militaries that were forming, each country wanted someone to have their back

  5. Who aligned themselves with who? • By 1882 Austria-Hungary and Germany who had been aligned for several years were joined by Italy to create an alliance • THE TRIPLE ALLIANCE • Fearing this move by the 3 powers England, France and Russia aligned • THE TRIPLE ENTENTE • Smaller countries such as Serbia, Romania, Albania, Montenegro, Greece and Portugal aligned with The Triple Entente

NATIONALISM • Nationalism played a huge role in the unification of Germany, Italy and Russia and was becoming popular in France • Problems between the Slavic people and the Serbs developed in Austria-Hungary • Constant fighting and pride of cultures made each side create alliances for protection

Reasons for Nationalism • Nearly every country believed in the power of their own country • Based on previous conflicts certain sides hated other sides, such as the French and the Germans • Countries made songs to support their causes, which showed a strong sense of national pride (Germany, England, France), people became outraged when someone spoke against their country

IMPERIALISM • Domination of one nation of the political, economic and/or cultural life of another country • Due to the Industrial Revolution of the 1800’s several European nations had a large portion of the world under their control • As countries expanded the wanted more so several countries were fighting over the same areas

Ideas of Imperialism • Countries of Europe had a Superiority Complex, meaning if they thought someone was inferior they would take them over • By 1900 England controlled 1/5 of the land in the world • Several countries clashed over the same land in areas of Africa. Nothing really came of it until Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany wanted a piece too!

  10. Assassination • Archduke Francis Ferdinand paid a visit to Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He hoped to give a voice to the Slavic people in B-H by going through the city • Seven young men who planned to assassinate the Archduke (Black Hand) spread out through the streets of Sarajevo

Assassination (continued) • First attempt failed, the 2nd attempt by GavriloPrincip killed the Archduke and his wife Sophie • The A-H empire blamed Serbia for the assassination, Germany followed through and had A-H’s “BACK” • The assassination became the “Spark” to WWI • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E6e8BW0l-E
