  2. Iowa Master Gardeners • Program began in Scott County in 1979 • More than 12,000 Iowans trained as Master Gardeners • MGs in nearly all of Iowa’s 99 counties

  3. Iowa Master Gardeners • Provided 105,000 hours of service in 2013 • Value of service > $2.2 million

  4. Become a Master Gardener

  5. Become a Master Gardener Core Training (40 hrs) • 8 sessions (24 hours) via Adobe Connect • 3 sessions (9 hours) face-to-face locally • 1 session (7 hours) hands-on class on campus

  6. Become a Master Gardener Core Training (40 hrs) Botany Trees & Shrubs Soils Animal Ecology Weeds Fruits IPM Vegetables Pesticides Turf Plant Pathology Landscape Design Entomology Herbaceous Ornamentals Composting Houseplants

  7. Become a Master Gardener Volunteer (40 hrs) Complete internship with approved MG volunteer service

  8. As a Master Gardener

  9. As a Master Gardener, you are: • Agents of ISU Extension • Expected to provide research-based information • Accountable to local Extension council • Accountable to county tax payers • NOT a garden club
