  1. Plerixafor: An Immunostimulant

  2. Plerixafor injection (Mozobil) specifically is a hematopoietic stem cell mobilizer, helps bone marrow release stem cells into the bloodstream so they can be collected as well as transplanted back into the body, used in patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or MultipleMyeloma.

  3. Mechanism ofAction Plerixafor specifically blocks a protein on the surface of blood stem cells. This protein basically ties blood stem cells to the bone marrow. Plerixafor 24mg increases the release of stem cells into the bloodstream. After then the stem cells can be collected by the apheresis machine, and subsequently frozen as well as stored until thetransplant.

  4. Dosage The treatment will first be given with G-CSF once in a day for 4days. Then plerixafor will be given 10-11 hours for adult patients and 8-12 hours for children or adolescents prior to each session of apheresis (a collection of stemcells). The usual plerixafor dose is 0.24 mg/kg body weight/day, and should be given to you as a subcutaneous injection. For adult patients who weigh 83 kg or less, your healthcare practitioner may prescribe a fixed dose of 20 mg ofplerixafor.

  5. Side Effects Following are the most commonly reported plerixafor side effects: Diarrhea Nausea (feeling sick) Injection site redness/irritation Fever Hypoproteinemia Decreased red blood cells Fatigue Loss of energy Weakness Thrombocytopenia
