  1. OVERVIEW OF THE FREE RANGE CHICKEN One of the most common claims about “free-range” chickens is that there is a gap between what it implies and what is needed to make the claim. Generally, the “free-range” claim on a label suggests that the animals were able to roam freely outdoor. However, there are no set standards in place to substantiate this claim through on-farm inspections. Producers can make the claim if the animals had some access to an outdoor space, the size of which is not specified. For chickens, the outdoor space does not even have to be big enough to house all the chickens. Moreover, there are no specific details about the condition of the place as to how well kept the place will be. There no precise timings mentioned either. The questions such as to when should the chickens be taken out and for how long, have to be answered properly. Creating a Natural Habitat The outdoor ranging space provides scope for these chickens to run around the pasture besides providing the opportunity to bathe in dust, forage, and chew on their food- all of which are important components of their natural behavior. When allowed to roam outside freely, foraging will take the maximum period of their time. This activity consists of scratching, pecking, scattering seeds, and eating insects. When chickens are stopped from being a part of their natural habitat, they develop health conditions. On the contrary, free-range chickens are healthier as they have a diverse range of food options on offer. Free-range chickens’ eggs have beautiful orange yolks—the result of nutritional diversity.

  2. Shouldn’t create a nuisance for neighbors Generally, hens get attracted to green pastures and garden beds. They might pop their heads out through the fences on seeing fresh vegetables. A small flock might even sneak out into your neighbor's garden. So, you will have to watch out for your hen’s activities. Try and share fresh eggs with your neighbors to build a social network on behalf of your hens. A few free-range management tips ●The chickens should get used to their home ground. ●You should keep a track of the site where they lay their eggs. ●Keep the predators at bay. ●Young garden plants or tender flower shoots should be fenced off since they can be a chicken’s favorite meal. ●A clean source of fresh water should always be available for the hens to access anywhere.
